Paintball games come in many forms depending on the field or location the games are being played. Games can be played indoors or outdoors, with a small number of players or hundreds of players. Some paintball is played as a team building exercise, some is played for recreational fun while other forms are played as part of competitive leagues or tournaments.

The history of paintball is rather brief. Compared to other sports it is relatively new. It's origins only go back as far as 1980 when James Hale of Daisy Manufacturing invented and patented what would become the first paintball gun. However, Hale did not invent the paintball gun with the idea of fun and games in mind. The original paintball gun was used for marking trees and livestock in the field. It was not long before the history of paintball took a more interesting turn.

The first question most uninitiated paintballers will ask is does it hurt? The chances of sustaining injuries playing paintball are far less than more popular sports played around the world. Yes, when you are hit by a paintball sometimes the hit area will sting for as few seconds, as it would if you were hit by a tennis ball, cricket ball, golf ball or football but the paintball industry has developed safety equipment and procedures to ensure that paintball is one of the safest sports in the world.
